May 23, 2009. Today was the Memorial Day 10k and 5k. I had originally signed up to run the 10k but with the circumstances I ended up running the 5k. This race was a very well organized one. The night before, which was Friday, Annie and I went and picked up our packets for the race. They had them at Noodles & Co. along and a free meal for the runners. Saturday morning I was still not sure which race I was going to be in. Annie, Kyle, and Heidi were all doing the 5k and Jessica was doing the 10k. Just a few minutes before it started I decided I'd rather not injure myself worse than I already was, so I went to the registration table and asked if I could switch to the 5k, luckily they were able to switch my number in the system so I would be a part of the 5k and my timing chip would work. The 10k start and a few minutes later the 5k started. Heidi and I stayed together for the first little bit doing about a 7:30 minute mile, then we both slowed down just a bit so we would not out do ourselves. I stayed around a 8 minute pace and Heidi was just a little bit behind me. I kept on running even though I was in so much pain. My toe was throbbing and my shins and calves felt like the muscles were going to rip out of my skin. Now, I realize that this can not be a good thing :) My training the last couple of months has been intense and has caused my legs to really hurt. I'm working on this and trying to get it resolved so my training does not have to slow down. I stopped at one point to stretch my legs and Heidi caught up with me. We ran together for a few seconds then I went on ahead with only about 1/2 mile to go. My time was 26 min. Out of the 27 females in my age division (25-29) I came in 5th place..so not to bad! After the race I sat on the grass for about 20 minutes stretching my legs and watching the rest of the runners come in. Heidi was only about 1 minute behind me and Annie and Kyle came in a little bit later. Next race is the Provo Trailrun 10k which is this coming Saturday, if I can figure out why my shins are doing what they are doing and I can get it to stop then I'll be running in this race. So wish me luck!
